Tourist Activities

Nestled at the heart of Central Luzon, the province of Pampanga was literally born of the rivers. Books on history say around 300 to 400 AD, Sumatran Prince Balagtas of the Madjapajit Empire led an expedition to establish an independent kingdom. He and his followers sailed towards Central Luzon spurred by tales of a paradise lying in that region. They passed through two rivers, the Rio Grande and the Rio Chico. Along these waterways they settled and blended with the dwellers and practiced their knowledge in irrigation farming, cloth, weaving, pottery making and metal working. Eventually the settlers and dwellers became known as "Tagapangpang". "Pang-Pang" translates into "river banks". The name evolved into "Pangpangans" and then into "Pampanga", the latter courtesy of the Spanish conquistadors who had difficulty with the "ng". The Pampango settlements became the center of learning and a model of progressive living.
